The Tune M1 and the Tune M1L come standard with aluminum awning doors, but most of our customers opt to swap at least one out for glass. If you’re having a hard time deciding between the two, we’re here to break it down for you.
Both options allow multidirectional bed and gear access. Each awning door is lockable from the outside, and the rear door is lockable from both the inside and the outside.
Aesthetic:
When it comes to aesthetics, the tempered glass is usually preferred. The glass panels are modern and privacy-smoked with 9% Visible Light Transmission (VLT) that blocks 91% of light. In the Tune M1L, the awning doors are larger, as the profiles on the M1L are slimmer and lighter, giving you an even cleaner look.

Weight:
If you’re aiming to reduce your camper’s weight, you may want to opt for aluminum doors. The aluminum awning doors are counted in the overall camper weight. Each glass awning door weighs a minimum of 21.6lbs, and that increases based on your truck size. If you opt for glass on both sides and the back, that’s an additional 72.4lbs minimum.

Weights based on a 5’ Tacoma:
21.6-22.5lbs Side Glass
29.2-30.4lbs Rear Glass
Price:
The regular aluminum awning doors are included in the base price, so there is no additional cost. The aluminum barn doors, which allow for easier entry and exit into the Tune, are an upgrade and are not included in the base price, if selected. The tempered glass awning doors are an additional charge, depending on your truck.
Visibility:
Unless you plan on installing a rear dash cam, you may benefit from having a glass awning door on the rear, paired with the cab access slider, for increased visibility while driving. Many customers pair this with passenger side glass for even more visibility.
When you’re camped somewhere, it’s also a huge benefit to have glass awning doors if you want more light in your camper and better views. However, keep in mind that when it is dark outside and the interior halo lights are turned on, it is possible to see inside. If you camp in more public areas, you may want to opt for aluminum or install curtains for privacy.

Safety
Our tempered glass is ¼” thick and double the thickness of the standard glass on your truck.
However, if safety is your main concern, the structural integrity of aluminum doors makes them the superior choice. While our tempered glass is significantly stronger than standard glass, the aluminum awning doors ultimately provide the best protection against forced entry.
8’ Bed Trucks
Due to the longer length, campers for our 8' bed trucks feature a split awning system, giving each side of the camper two awning doors that open independently. Each of the four side doors can be configured separately to be glass or aluminum.

Still can’t decide? Get both! It’s easy to swap your doors out at home in under 10 minutes.
FAQ
What are the main advantages of a truck camper?
Most people choose truck campers for more interior space, better insulation, improved weather protection, their off-road capability and the ability to work, sleep, and live comfortably on the road. A truck camper also offers better security and is easier to set up and pack down.
Why choose Tune Outdoor for your adventures?
We build lightweight, durable campers designed to maximize space, function, and reliability without overloading your truck. Our modular designs, premium materials, and long-term support make our campers a dependable choice for everyday travel and serious off-grid adventures!
Can people see inside the camper at night with the lights on?
If the interior lights are on and it's dark outside, some visibility is possible through glass doors. Curtains or interior covers are recommended for high-traffic or public campsites.
How break-resistant are the tempered glass awning doors?
The awning doors use ¼” tempered glass, twice as thick as standard vehicle glass. They’re highly impact-resistant, but aluminum remains the strongest option for maximum security.
